Legacy

Help us make a difference

Blue Apple Theatre is dedicated to empowering people through theatre, dance, and film. We are committed to make a growing impact on the most pressing issues facing people with learning disabilities. Our vision is to live in a world where people with learning disabilities are treated equally and fairly in the arts sector and beyond. Our mission is to challenge prejudices through high-quality and inclusive artistic practices, enabling learning disabled people to achieve excellence in all levels of their lives. Our work and our ability to plan future work relies on the support of individuals, organisations and Trusts who generously donate money, time, and expertise to enable Blue Apple to thrive.

The legacy support of generous individuals will help to ensure Blue Apple can continue to make a difference to some of the most disadvantaged people in our society for a long time.

Finding a solicitor

In England and Wales, go to lawsociety.org.uk, or call 020 7242 1222.

Changing a Will

A solicitor can help you add a codicil to your existing Will to ensure it is legally valid.

Tax considerations

Gifts in Wills to charities are tax efficient. If your estate is going to attract inheritance tax, any gift you leave to Blue Apple Theatre will be deducted from your estate before any tax liability is calculated. So, if your estate is £20,000 over the amount allowed as tax-free, and you leave Blue Apple Theatre £2,000, then inheritance tax will only be payable on £18,000. Also, from 6th April 2012, if you leave 10% or more of your estate to a charity, you will be taxed at a lower rate (36% rather than 40%) on any part of your estate that qualifies for inheritance tax.

What kind of gift can I leave in my Will?

There are 3 main types of gift you can leave in your Will:

A residuary gift is a percentage of your estate once any specified gifts have been made to friends and family. Its value will be dependent on the value of your estate at any given time rather than a set amount. This provides donors with more flexibility when deciding how to ensure that their loved ones are well looked after first.

A pecuniary gift is a specific amount of money. Please consider that that this type of gift is likely to lose value over time and may end up being less than you initially intend.

A specific gift is a gift of a specified item – such as a personal possession, land, buildings or stocks and shares.

Single vs Mirror Wills

A single Will is for an individual. Mirror Wills are two separate Wills that both express the same wishes for example, for two spouses or partners. The two Wills mirror what the other says.

How will Blue Apple use my gift?

Our annual review shows the scope of work undertaken by Blue Apple to promote social inclusion of people with learning disabilities. Legacies help ensure Blue Apple can continue to make a positive difference to some of the most disadvantaged people in our society.

Can I specify how my gift is used?

Yes. While Blue Apple Theatre needs to invest in response to the changing needs of people with learning disabilities, we also welcome funding for specific aspects of our services. To specify how Blue Apple Theatre should use your gift, please express this clearly in your Will. Where your gift is for a specific purpose, we are bound to use the funds exactly as specified. To avoid complications arising from changes in future services, we recommend you make a non-binding wish.
